Storytelling for UX Teams: Plan & structure your work for greatest impact

Stories matter. As humans we are biologically wired for storytelling. Stories not only help us to make sense of the world around us, but help us make better-informed decisions.
For UX teams, storytelling is a powerful tool to embed in the planning and delivery phases of research and design. The methods we shared can help improve engagement and buy-in among key stakeholders – and ultimately influence decision-making.
In this webinar Marise Phillips walked us through concepts of storytelling, explained why storytelling is so important for UX teams, and shared storytelling structures to use while setting goals, planning impactful presentations, and creating deliverables.

Systemic Design: A methodology and toolkit for change

We live in a world of constant change and growing interconnected complexity. As design professionals, we are dealing with these increasingly complex problem areas, but we cannot address them well using the conventional design methods, we can even make them worse. A way to do better is adding systems thinking to our skills. Systemic design offers a way to do just that. Systemic design integrates systems thinking and human-centered design, with the intention of helping designers cope with these complex - aka wicked - design projects. In this talk, Kristel explained what systemic design was and presented a methodology and tools to co-create systems change. She also presented the book about the toolkit, written in co-authorship with Dr. Peter Jones.

Four ways the Pandemic has changed UX Research

Given our own experiences about how our work had changed, we were curious: How has the pandemic changed and shaped UX research. We conducted a survey that addressed the following questions: Compared to how we worked two years ago with what we’re working now, how have we changed? And, perhaps more interestingly, What will we doing two years from now? The survey was launched in 4Q2021 on social media (predominantly LinkedIn) asking UX researchers questions about how their work has changed because of the pandemic. We received over 100 responses. Our aim was to listen primarily to those who were doing UX research for the majority of their time (i.e. excluding UI/UX design or UI programming), and those who had been engaged in UX research prior to the pandemic. Everyone in the sample had three or more years of experience (with more than 50% having more than six years’ experience). Seventy-five percent of respondents had a team reporting to them. In the end, we whittled the feedback down to 63 respondents from 22 countries, who represented UX research from in-house, agency, and government environments. From their responses, we found that the effects of the pandemic impacted four aspects: The demand for UX research, The size of the research team, A change in methods The increase in UX research skills.

Design Maturity Model: A roadmap for transforming your organization

In this talk, we introduced the UXalliance Design Maturity model, which takes a broad approach to design as a mindset and process throughout an organization, acknowledging its contribution to business success. The model consists of six dimensions: Research, Design, People, Culture, Strategy, and Metrics. The model can be used to assess an organization's design maturity by collecting data from key stakeholders through in-depth interviews and a self-administered online survey, and the results can be used to create a roadmap to guide the organization's design transformation.

Build better AI products with UX

“We built it, because we could” is a common theme in the world of tech. In many cases, engineers and developers create because they want to see what could happen. Artificial intelligence (AI) has matured to the point where its relevance and importance are clear. However, we need to take a long and hard look in the datasets that AI is using to learn. The time of “let’s see what happens” has passed, and what AI learns now might be difficult to unlearn. In this webinar, Gavin discussed core elements from his book, AI and UX: Why Artificial Intelligence Needs User Experience (Apress publishing). Case studies illustrated successes and failures of AI and presented a UX framework to pave the way for AI to have success along three core dimensions: context, interaction, and trust. Examples within healthcare and other industries were presented to demonstrate how AI can overcome failures of the past and set a foundation for a better future.
