As the UX world evolves, researchers are increasingly navigating uncertain terrain: new tools emerge daily, methods shift, and expectations around speed, scalability, and efficiency are rising. AI promises to change everything – but how can we, as UX professionals, adopt these tools in a way that is informed, practical, and ethically grounded?

This workshop explores exactly that. Rooted in the Masterclass theme “Navigating Uncertainty: Fun, Flow, and the Future of UX”, we take participants on a structured, exploratory journey through the application of AI in UX research – combining clear guidance with playful experimentation.

We focus on three core questions:

  • Which AI tools can truly enhance your research process – and how?

  • Where are the boundaries of AI in practice – and what still needs human intuition?

  • How do we maintain flow and quality in a fast-changing digital environment?

Through five focused modules, we introduce participants to a practical toolkit for integrating AI meaningfully into their daily work. At the center: clarity, confidence, and critical thinking – not hype.

Module 1: Overview of Current AI Tools in UX Research

We begin by mapping the landscape of AI-powered tools that are relevant across the research process – from planning and execution to analysis and synthesis. In this module, participants will:

Explore tools for writing, analysis, transcription, and automation

Learn criteria for evaluating tools based on quality, usefulness, and compliance (incl. GDPR)

Reflect on which tools fit their context – and which might pose risks

This section gives orientation in a fragmented and fast-moving tool ecosystem, building the foundation for confident decision-making.

Module 2: Creating Interview Guides with AI – Why Prompting Matters

Strong research starts with a strong interview guide – and AI can help. But it’s only as good as the prompts we give it. In this module, participants will:

Practice writing and refining prompts to generate relevant and insightful interview questions

Discover which research goals AI supports best – and where manual effort still pays off

Test how small changes in phrasing affect the depth and focus of AI-generated content

Participants will compare different guide versions generated from the same research objective, reflecting on quality and usability.

Module 3: AI-Powered Interviewing – Testing the Bots

Yes, AI can now conduct interviews. But does that make sense in UX research? In this session, we explore:

Live demonstrations of two interview bots – with different levels of sophistication

The structure, responsiveness, and conversational quality of AI interviews

Limitations in emotional nuance, follow-ups, and dynamic adaptation

Ethical and practical considerations for using bots in moderated or unmoderated studies

We also discuss when automation might help – for example, in low-stakes surveys or early-stage exploration – and when a human is irreplaceable.

Module 4: Qualitative Analysis with AI – Turning Transcripts into Insight

Analysing interviews is one of the most time-consuming steps in UX research. Can AI really help here? This part focuses on:

How AI supports thematic analysis, summarisation, and frequency mapping

Ways to structure prompts for coding and clustering responses

Trade-offs between speed and interpretive nuance

How to verify the quality and coherence of AI-generated insights

We use real-world data samples (fully anonymized) and compare AI-assisted versus manual coding approaches.

Module 5: From Uncertainty to Clarity – Mapping AI’s Role in Your Workflow

To close the workshop, we shift the lens from tools to strategy. Participants will:

Reflect on their own research routines and pain points

Identify repetitive tasks that could be streamlined with AI

Develop actionable ideas for improving efficiency in a responsible, future-oriented way

Share and discuss use cases across different industries and contexts

This is where the “fun and future” come into play: by allowing space for individual exploration and creative reframing, we equip researchers not just with tools, but with the mindset to face change confidently.

🎯 Key Takeaways for Participants

After this workshop, participants will:

✅ Have tested and evaluated several AI tools specific to UX research

✅ Be equipped to judge AI-generated content for quality and reliability

✅ Understand how to write effective prompts for different research phases

✅ Know when and how AI can replace, enhance, or complement human effort

✅ Have developed personal strategies for applying AI in their own work context

✅ Be more confident and curious about the future of AI in UX
